Is Rhinebeck Crew a school sport?
Yes. The Rhinebeck Central School District endorses and supports the team by hiring and paying for the coaching staff. They also provide buses to and from the Poughkeepsie boathouse for weekday practices. Rhinebeck Crew, Inc. provides the remainder of the funding: purchase, maintenance and storage of all boats and equipment, motor launches for the coaches, and transporting the boats to and from regattas. We also cover the costs of entry fees, insurance and training. We also fund and staff a food trailer to provide our rowers with healthy snacks, drinks, and hot food at the regattas.
In which season does the team compete?
High school and middle school crew is a spring sport. Regattas are May through early June.
Who can be on Rhinebeck Crew?
Any student of Rhinebeck High School or Bulkeley Middle School who meets the school athletic participation requirements and can pass a swim test.
Do you need previous rowing experience?
No. Our program is open to any student interested in rowing. In fact, the vast majority of incoming rowers enter the program with no experience.
When and how do I sign my athlete up?
Open registration will be announced each year in late January/early February on our website.
When and where does the team practice?
Indoor practices run February through March at Rhinebeck High School. On-river practices begin in April at the Hudson River Rowing Association Boathouse in Poughkeepsie.
When and where does the team compete?
Regattas are held at various locations, including but not limited to Poughkeepsie, Saratoga, West Point, Syracuse and West Milford, NJ.
How does Rhinebeck Crew, Inc. fund this program?
Our rowers pay dues and we organize a number of fundraisers throughout the year. We do an annual appeal sent to local businesses and individuals and other fundraisers throughout the year that enable us to keep the program cost as low as possible for students and parents.
